Andrew Likely to get Elite Director’s Job

I’ve just read here that Andrew seems to appear to be ahead of Sir Clive in the RFU’s selection process for the new Elite Director of Rugby role. This has to be a good thing. Woodward was a good coach who did a good job for England post 1999 World Cup. He built a team intended to peak during 2003, and the team was rewarded with a 6 Nations Grand slam and the World cup. However, when the experienced players started to retire, he had no reserves. Andy Robinson, on the other hand, has failed England. Woodward built a team to win, and get general support and interest for rugby up. That he certainly managed, Welford Road sells out months in advance, as does Sixways. Robinson needed to introduce the youth into the team in one go, and then start to build a platform from which the international team can develop, and be sucessful in the future. We may not have had a team that could win in the 2007 RWC, but it would have been strong and made it to the semis, or at leats the quarter finals. I doubt Robinson’s team will do so well, with the team changing constantly, and players being dropped and reinstated. At the time, I considered it a bad choice by the RFU to appoint robinson, and I would have liked to see Andrew as head coach. However, in the Elite Director of Rugby’s role, i hope he will be able to control the future direction of the England setup, and ensure that we can continue to produce strong teams for the 2011 world cup, and many more there after.
