Problems with IE7 and del.icio.us toolbar

Righty then, I’ve been trying (unsuccessfully) to replace the little blogroll/links panel in the right hand column with a “Links” page, which I hoped would be able to contain a set of del.icio.us favourites grouped by tags, and so would never need updating manually. I decided, therefore, to install the del.icio.us toolbar buttons, to make adding favourites to my del.icio.us account as painless as possible. That is where the problems (minor as they were) began. Firstly, the buttons were hideously big, and I also discovered that IE7 does not allow you to insert buttons to the right of the tab strip (where all of its buttons and drop down menus are). The second thing I learnt, was that my right click no longer provided the option to “Open Link in New Tab”, which is just down right irritating. Needless to say that particular plugin did not last very long at all.

It did get me wondering though, why don’t Microsoft provide the option to create an online copy of your favourites list? I mean, MS is opening up considerably, with the docx and other xml Office formats being ratified and made more open, and Windows Live Writer being able to interface with many open-source blogs being just two examples, why don’t they replace the old-fashioned method of storing shortcuts in a tree of folders and allow their browser to interface with online favourites lists? At the very least, surely they could use Tags to sort and group links.
